UAV optical fiber is a technical system that transmits control signals and video data between the UAV and operator using optical cables. It takes advantage of optical fibers’ high bandwidth and resistance to interference to restructure the communication link, keeping the UAV operating reliably in complex electromagnetic environments.
A drone fiber optic system comprises three key components:
On the drone side: It is equipped with cameras, sensors, an onboard computer, and an optoelectronic conversion module, which handle data collection and preliminary processing.
The fiber optic cable: It employs ultra-fine, flexible optical fibers (usually less than 0.5 mm in diameter). For instance, fiber optic cables used in the Russia-Ukraine conflict are typically 5–10 km long, with certain models extending up to 30 km.
The ground segment: It includes an optoelectronic converter, a control terminal (such as the LQ video and data transmission remote controller), and a display unit, enabling two-way conversion between optical and electrical signals.
The working principle is as follows:
Ground control signals are converted from electrical to optical form and transmitted to the drone via fiber optic cable. Video, flight parameters, and other data collected by the drone are converted back from optical to electrical signals and sent to the ground station, forming a complete wired communication structure. This approach overcomes the interference susceptibility of radio signals and guarantees low-latency, highly stable data transmission.
Fiber Optic Transmission System
A fiber optic transmission system provides secure, real-time video transmission even in highly disruptive environments, with a transmission distance ranging from 3 to 30 kilometers, making it suitable for both short‑distance and long‑distance applications. It comprises three core components: the fiber reel, the aerial unit, and the ground unit.
The fiber reel is lightweight and compact, constructed using high‑strength, rugged optical fiber to ensure minimal signal attenuation and exceptional durability.
The fiber deployment system incorporates advanced internal payout technology, enabling smooth, tangle‑free fiber delivery directly from the reel core. This structure reduces mechanical strain and avoids snags during flight operations, offering enhanced safety and stability for aerial missions—even in challenging terrain conditions.
The ground unit supports plug‑and‑play functionality and can be directly linked to standard PC‑based controllers for rapid setup and deployment.
