With the widespread use of fiber optical in high-speed communications, reliable and efficient installation and maintenance of fiber optic are critical to high-performance networks. According to NTT's advanced technology, 98% of installers and 80% of network owners report that the contamination of fiber optic connectors is the biggest cause of network failure. Contaminated or dirty fiber optic connectors often result in reduced signal performance or link failure, so properly maintaining and cleaning fiber optic cables will help reduce contamination on fiber optic interfaces. It is true that the fiber optic tools play an important role in the maintenance of the optical fiber system. It maintains an effective connection between all optical fiber equipment.

1. Different Types of Fiber Optic Connectors

As we all know, fiber optic connectors are an integral part of fiber optic cable terminations, which have an important impact on the reliability of fiber transmission and system performance. In general, about 100 types of fiber optic connectors have entered the market. But the most commonly used fiber optic connectors include LC, SC, MU, ST, FC, MTRJ, NID, E2000, and MTP / MPO. Therefore, choosing the right fiber optic cleaning tool depends on the type of fiber optical connectors.

2. Cleaning Procedures of Fiber Optic

Before cleaning the optical fiber connector, you must understand the general cleaning procedures. In general, there are two methods for cleaning optical fiber connectors: dry cleaning and wet cleaning. Dry cleaning is to use a roll-type card cleaner or push-type fiber cleaner to wipe the end of the connector with a dry cleaning cloth in one direction. It can remove pollutants in the air and should be tried first. For wet cleaning, first wipe the end surface on the wet area, and then clean the potential residue on the end surface on the dry area. Wet cleaning is more aggressive than dry cleaning, but it can remove airborne pollutants and light oil residues. After dry cleaning, if the connector is still dirty, then immediately use wet cleaning to ensure that there is no residue on the end surface.

3. Cleaning Solutions of fiber Optic Connectors

1) Roll-type Fiber Cleaner

The roll-type fiber cleaner is designed to effectively clean almost all fiber optic connectors with contact ferrules, including LC, MU, SC, FC, ST, MPO / MTP, MTRJ, etc.

2) Fiber Cleaning Wipes

Fiber cleaning wipes are designed to dry or used with fiber cleaning alcohol to effectively remove common contaminants in fiber jumpers. These fiber cleaning wipes are lint-free and non-abrasive, so they can provide excellent cleaning for fiber optic connector ferrule without the risk of scratches or lint residues. They are specifically designed to gently clean liquids and dust, and are suitable for cleaning instruments, surfaces, parts and lenses.

3) Foam Swabs

Fiber optic lint-free foam swabs are most suitable for cleaning 1.25mm or 2.5mm fiber optic adapters and connectors. Both 1.25mm and 2.5mm foam swabs are made of polyester and polyurethane. These small foam swabs have good performance in cleaning the end face of adapters or connectors, and can also be used in other devices, such as printers, computers, optical instruments, camera lenses, etc.
