The fiber patch cable (also known as fiber optical connector) refers to the optical cable equipped with connector plugs to achieve active connection of the optical path. Fiber patch cables are easily contaminated due to reasons such as non-standard operation, so we will introduce some cleaning recommendations for fiber patch cables.



1. Clean the fiber patch cable without the assistance of professional tools

Without the aid of professional tools, you need to prepare anhydrous alcohol, clean cotton balls, and lens paper. The cleaning steps are as follows.


1) Hold a clean cotton ball in one hand, and then drip anhydrous alcohol on the cotton ball. The alcohol should not be dripped too much.


2) Wipe the end face with a cotton ball with absolute alcohol in the same direction, the wiping number of times depends on the dirt degree on the end face.


3) Use more than 3 layers of lens paper to wipe the end face wiped with alcohol in the same direction until the alcohol is completely dry and the end face light refracts the dazzling reflection.


4) Carefully check the light reflection at each place on the end face and whether there is fiber debris remaining on the end face. Repeat steps 1 to 3 above if necessary until the end face is clean and flawless.



2. Clean the end face with the help of professional tools

At present, there are many manufacturers of professional fiber optical cleaning tools, including fiber optical cleaning cloth, fiber optical cleaning card, fiber optical cleaning pen, cleaning gas, etc. These professional tools are very convenient to clean the fiber optical. The specific steps are as follows.


1) Dust-free paper or non-woven cloth

Wipe the end face of the fiber optical connector with dust-free paper or non-woven cloth and absolute alcohol. The dust-free paper is made of native wood pulp with special processing technology, ultra-low dust, pure texture, efficient water absorption, fine paper. It will not scratch the surface of the connector. The non-woven fabric is strong and soft, it does not produce fiber debris, does not carry any chemical impurities, does not cause allergic reactions, and is not easy to fluff. This method is characterized by simple operation and low cost, but the cleaning effect is general.


2) Cassette cleaner

The appearance of the cassette cleaner is similar to the "tape" of the early recorder. It uses a special roll of cleaning tape and is installed in a rollable shell. Since it uses strong adhesive to stick and remove the dirt on the end of the connector, it does not require alcohol, and it is very effective for each cleaning. The disadvantage is that sometimes the adhesive itself will remain on the end surface of the connector, and the adhesive tape is a consumable, and the cost is higher.


3) Special cleaning pen

The special cleaning pen for fiber optical is specially designed to clean the inside of the fiber optical adapter, or to clean the end surface of the ferrule that is not easy to reach. Its shape is like a pen, one end can extend into the ceramic sleeve of the adapter. The working principle includes both cotton swabs plus absolute alcohol and strong viscose. Common specifications are 1.25mm and 2.5mm. 1.25mm is used to clean LC type connectors, 2.5mm is used to clean FC / SC / ST and other connectors.


4) Ultrasonic cleaner

Anyone who has worked on the polishing of fiber optical ferrules knows that there is an "ultrasonic cleaning" process after the polishing of fiber optical connectors, which is used to clean the glue and dirt on the end surface of the ferrule. Today, there are portable ultrasonic cleaners in the market. Its working principle is not much different from other ultrasonic cleaning methods. The key is how to turn the cleaning fluid into an ultrasonic "liquid column" in such a small space and send it to the connector end, how to recover and suck the waste liquid in the same small space. The whole process takes more than ten seconds, and there will be no contact or any harmful residue on the connector except where it should clean.


5) High-pressure blowing method

Its working principle is to apply cleaning fluid to the end face of the connector, and then blow it at the end face of the connector with high-pressure. The advantage of this method is the short time, which can be done in a few seconds. There are also some special gas cleaning tools in the market, which are very convenient.
