What is Fiber Optic Adapter?

Both ends of the fiber optic adapter can be inserted into fiber connectors of different interface types to realize the conversion between different interfaces such as FC, SC, ST, LC and so on. It is widely used in optical fiber distribution frames (ODF), optical fiber communication equipment, instruments, etc. It has the characteristics of superior performance, stability and reliability.

Main Characteristics

The optical fiber is connected by the adapter through its internal open sleeve to ensure the highest connection performance between the optical fiber connectors. In order to be fixed on various panels, a variety of fine fixed flanges are also designed.

The two ends of the conversion adapter can be connected with fiber connectors of different interface types, and provide the connection between the APC end faces. The dual or multi adapter can improve the installation density and save space.

Product Type

According to the different optical fiber connectors, optical fiber adapters can provide adapter parts corresponding to the optical fiber connectors.

FC Type

This connector was first developed by Japan NTT. The earliest FC type connectors used ceramic pins at the docking end. This kind of connector is simple in structure, convenient in operation and easy to manufacture, but the fiber end is more sensitive to dust, and it is easy to produce Fresnel reflection, so it is difficult to improve the return loss performance. Later, this type of connector was improved, using a spherical pin with a mating end face, and the external structure was not changed, which made the insertion loss and return loss performance greatly improved.

SC Type

The outer shell is rectangular, and the structural dimensions of the used pin and coupling sleeve are exactly the same as the FC type. However, the end surface of the pin is mostly PC or APC type grinding method. This kind of connector has the advantages of low price, convenient insertion and removal, small fluctuation of insertion loss, high compressive strength and high installation density.

Biconical Type

The most representative products of this type of optical fiber connector are developed by Baer laboratory in the United States. It consists of two precision molded cylindrical plugs with truncated and conical ends and a coupling component with a biconical plastic sleeve inside.

Din47256 Type

This is a connector developed by Germany. The structure size of the pin and coupling sleeve used in the connector is the same as that of FC type, and the end face is treated by PC grinding. Compared with FC connector, its structure is more complex. There is a spring controlling the pressure in the internal metal structure, which can avoid the damage of the end face due to the excessive plug-in pressure. In addition, the mechanical accuracy of this connector is high, so the insertion loss value is small.

Product Features

1. Low insertion loss, less than 0.2db per connection loss.

2. Good interchangeability.

3. Good repeatability.

The fiber optic adapter is mainly used to connect the same or different optical fiber movable connectors in the optical fiber exposure, so that the optical path is unblocked with little loss. It can precisely connect the two sections of the optical fiber, so that the optical energy output by the transmitting optical fiber can be coupled to the receiving optical fiber to the maximum extent, and the impact on the system due to its intervention in the optical link is minimized.
