Optical fiber adapter is also called optical fiber coupler and optical fiber flange plate. It is mainly applied to connect the same or different optical fiber movable connectors in the optical fiber line, so that the optical path can be unblocked with little loss. It can precisely connect the two sections of the optical fiber, so that the optical energy output by the transmitting optical fiber can be coupled to the receiving optical fiber to the maximum extent, and minimize the impact on the system caused by its intervention in the optical link.

1. Product Concept

The two ends of the optical fiber adapter can be inserted into different types of optical fiber connectors to realize the conversion between FC, SC, ST, LC, MTRJ, MPO, E2000 and other different interfaces. It is widely applied in optical fiber distribution frame (ODF), optical fiber communication equipment, instruments, etc., with superior performance, stability and reliability.

2. Main Characteristics

The optical fiber is connected by the adapter through its internal open sleeve to ensure the highest connection performance between the optical fiber connectors. In order to be fixed on various panels, a variety of fine fixed flanges are also designed. The two ends of the adapter can be connected with different types of fiber connectors, and provide the connection between the end faces of the APC. The dual or multi adapter can improve the installation density and save space.

3. Type of Optical Fiber Adapter

Depending on the fiber connector, the optical fiber adapter can provide the connecting parts of the corresponding fiber connector. The applicable models of optical fiber connectors are as follows.

1)FC

FC is the abbreviation of ferrule connector, which indicates that the external reinforcement method is to adopt metal sleeve and the fastening method is turnbuckle. The earliest FC type connectors used the butt end of ceramic pins. This kind of connector is simple in structure, convenient in operation and easy to manufacture, but the fiber end is more sensitive to dust, and it is easy to produce Fresnel reflection. So it is difficult to improve the return loss performance. Later, this type of connector adopts the pin (PC) with spherical butt end face, but the external structure has not changed, which makes the insertion loss and return loss performance greatly improved.

2)SC

The shell is rectangular, and the structure size of the pin and coupling sleeve is the same as FC type. PC or APC type grinding method is often adopted for the end face of pin. the fastening method is plug pin latch type without rotation. This kind of connector has the advantages of low price, convenient insertion and removal, small fluctuation of insertion loss, high compressive strength and high installation density.

3)LC

LC is made of modular jack (RJ) latch mechanism. The size of the pin and sleeve used is half of the size for common SC, FC, etc., which is 1.25mm. This can improve the density of the fiber connector in the fiber distribution frame.

(4)MTRJ

In order to connect with the optical transceiver, the optical fiber on the end face of the connector is designed with two cores (0.75mm apart), which is the next generation of high-density optical fiber connector mainly for data transmission.

(5) MU Type

MU (Minimum Unit Coupling) connector is the world's smallest single core optical fiber connector developed by NTT on the basis of the most commonly used SC connector. The connector adopts a 1.25mm diameter sleeve and a self retaining mechanism, which has the advantage of high density installation.

In a word, the main function of fiber optic adapter is to connect. For example, if two identical water pipes are to be connected and one joint is to be added, the fiber optic adapter is to connect two identical or different optical fiber connectors together.
