What do you know about fiber optic? When we walk on the street,  we can see the sign "There is fiber optic cable underground". How many megabytes of fiber are used for broadband at home? How much do you know about fiber optic? What features does it have? In addition, what’s the function of it? The article can help you have a better understanding of it.

1. The brief introduction of fiber optic

The name fiber optic is short for optical fiber. It is a fiber made of glass or plastic, which can be used as a light transmission tool with fast speed, large flow and good anti-interference. In 1880, Bell invented an optical telephone using light waves as a carrier, but because of the lack of an ideal light source and transmission medium, fiber optic communication didnt develop for a long time. It was not until 1966 that Dr. Gao Kun, a Chinese-British, first used the principle of radio waves to conduct signals, and proposed the idea of using fiber optic to transmit light waves over long distances. Whats more, he believed that a low-loss fiber optic with practical significance could be produced. After the advent of the low-loss fiber optic , there has been a climax of research on fiber optic communication around the world. In 1975, the fiber optic communication experiment of the Atlanta experiment system in the United States was successful. In 1983, Bell Labs of the United States laid two main lines of fiber optic communication with a length of 600 kilometers and 270 kilometers on the east and west coasts of the United States. Since then, many other countries in the world have successively established many short-distance fiber optic communication systems.

2. The working principle and function of fiber optic

Those who have studied physics know that there are two kinds of light reflection. They are specular reflection (total reflection) and diffuse reflection, and the working principle of fiber optic is to use specular reflection. The optical signal enters the interior from a section of the fiber optic, and then the fiber optic contacts the inner wall of the fiber optic. Later, the mirror reflection occurs at the contact point, and then it contacts the internal wall, so the mirror reflection occurs. The light is emitted after reaching the other end of the fiber optic. In this way, the conduction of the optical signal in the fiber optic is finished. The main function of fiber optic is signal transmission.

3. The practical application of fiber optic

In fact, fiber optic has many applications in life. Broadband for domestic use uses fiber optic for network transmission. After entering the home, the optical signal is converted into an electrical signal by an optical cat to achieve signal conversion. As for the medical use, fiber optic can be made into endoscopes, and fiber  optic can also realize image transmission, which is determined by the characteristics and structure of the fiber optic. Under ideal conditions, the fiber bundle transfers the image from a section to the other end, and there is no change in the attributes of the incoming image. When it refers to the use the communication, people use underground fiber optic cable for communication. The amount of data transmitted is larger and safer. There is almost no attenuation of the signal during transmission. Additionally, the fibre optic in the internal network of the enterprise is also widely used. Operators connect the fiber optic to the enterprise computer room and perform signal conversion through the fiber optic transceiver. If two office site need an internal network connection, it doesnt make a difference if you use a network cable and a repeater, and the signal attenuation is very serious. If you use fiber optic, you can perfectly solve this problem. There are many other applications of fiber optic in our life.

At present, it is an era of rapid development of information technology, so the development of all walks of life is inseparable from communication technology. Fiber optic plays a main role in communication. Its appearance and application greatly makes our lives convenient and changes our life. In a word, fibre optic will continue to change our life.
