What is Optical Fiber Splitter?

Publish Time: 2020-06-30     Origin: Site

Optical fiber splitter is a device that divides and combines light wave energy. It distributes the light energy transmitted in one fiber to two or more fibers in a given proportion, or synthesizes the light energy transmitted in multiple fibers into one fiber. It is an optical passive device that can decompose an optical signal into multiple optical signals.

Function of Optical Fiber Splitter

It divides a primary light source into multiple parts through a splitter and outputs the light. It can also synthesize multiple light paths through a splitter into a single main light source. It is a device that can complete reversible transmission.

Working Principle of Optical Fiber Splitter

When single-mode optical fibers transmit light signals, the energy of light is not entirely concentrated in the optical fiber core. A small amount of light energy is transmitted through the coating near the optical fiber core. That is, if the two optical fibers are close enough, the field of light transmitted in one optical fiber can enter the other optical fiber, and the light signal is redistributed between the two optical fibers.

Optical Index of Optical Fiber Splitter

Additional loss: For optical fiber splitters, the additional loss is an indicator of the quality of the device manufacturing process, which reflects the inherent loss of the device manufacturing process. The smaller the loss, the better it is, and it is an evaluation indicator of the quality of the device manufacturing. The insertion loss only represents the output power status of each output port, not only has the inherent loss factor, but also takes into account the influence of the splitting ratio. Therefore, the difference of additional loss between different optical fiber splitters does not reflect the quality of the device.

Uniformity: Uniformity refers to the variation of insertion loss at each output of a uniform light splitter.

Splitting ratio: The splitting ratio is defined as the output power ratio of each output port of the optical fiber splitter. In the system application, the splitting ratio is really determined according to the actual optical power required by the optical node of the system, and the splitting ratio of the optical fiber splitter is related to the wavelength of the transmitted light.

Isolation: Isolation refers to the isolation ability of one optical path of optical fiber splitter to other optical signals. In the above indicators, the isolation is more important for the optical fiber splitter. In practical applications, devices with isolation of more than 40dB are often needed, otherwise the performance of the whole system will be affected. In addition, the stability of optical fiber splitter is also an important index. Stability refers to that when the external temperature changes and the working state of other devices changes, the splitting ratio and other performance indexes of the optical fiber splitter should remain basically unchanged.

Advantages of Optical Fiber Splitter

The fiber optical splitter has low additional loss, good directivity, low polarization sensitivity, high cost performance, high mechanical stability and environmental stability.

Application of Optical Fiber Splitter

The optical fiber splitter is widely used in optical fiber communication system, radio and television network and other fields.
